It seems to be a widely preferred spelling - again, you can compare volume of web search results for a better idea. Just now I searched both spellings again: "Archeology" - 723,000 results "Archaeology" - 40,800,000 results As you can see, the number of results for "archaeology" outnumbers the 'American' spelling by FORTY MILLION. Both spellings should be included in the American dictionary.
