You can't create a new chart when the formula syntax is not Calc A1.  It's as
simple as that.

1. fill some data in a sheet.
2. while the cursor is within the data area, select Insert - Chart.
3. normally, the data area is outlined at this point, but it isn't.  And the
preview picture shows a generic chart for empty data.
4. click Next to go to the Data Range page reveals that the data range is not
detected.
