2005 -------
1. Open the attached test presentation
2. Select the text of the first bulleted item and its description
3. Select Main Menu->Slide Show->Custom Animation
4. From the Custom Animation Pane, click on "Add..."
5. Select, for example, the "Appear" entrance effect.
6. Click OK.

No effect will be added.

This works with objects, but not text selections.
This worked for text selections with m87.
