Sorry for the delay.
I've tried many invocations, such as, "LC_PAPER=de_DE.UTF-8 oowriter".
LC_PAPER does not seem to be recognised, throws up a couple of errors and is
ignored. Re-testing on a newer version of Mandriva (2009.1 rc2) did not throw
up any errors, but still did not work.
Setting LC_LOCALE to "de", "DE", "de_DE", or "de_DE.UTF-8" all had the same
effect - none, not even any errors except for a GTKspinbutton that seems to be
irrelevant.
I also downloaded OOo_3.0.1_LinuxIntel_install_wJRE_en-US.tar.gz today from
Openoffice.org, rather than rely on Mandriva's (potentially) broken RPMs.
After setting all LC_* variables to de_DE and running swriter the problem
persists.
New documents default to a printer setting of US letter, although the page
size, Format -> Page... does default to 21x29.7 which is A4.
