confirmed on linux and Mac/PPC
Exporting the file to doc and opening that doc with wordviewer (running with
wine) displays the wmf as intended.
My guess is that the wmf has a quirk or two, since opening the wmf file in gimp
or display also shows the image with the narrow font spacing.
If possible, please attach a small wmf that still exhibits the problem, i.e.
only some text with a rectangle around to show the "should-be" dimensions
