Vista (& XP) has a pointer/mouse option to "hide pointer when typing", the
moment you start typing in most writer programs the pointer disappears, then the
moment you touch the touchpad/mouse it shows back up. There is also an option
to hit ctrl to locate it as well. But this doesn't seem to be something
OpenOffice recognizes.

Personally I write a lot. Not only does the pointer cover things up as
suggested by the original poster but it often times a slight mis-touch and it
will insert itself so you end up typing in a place you did not intend or even
highlighting/deleting.

I know nothing about programming but...

Since this is a Windows feature & not necessarily a 'product feature' perhaps
there is a way to allow the OpenOffice product to recognize it?
