I made changes to sfx2\source\dialog\filedlghelper.cxx (273204) and fpicker\source\win32\filepicker\asyncrequest.cxx (273203). With these changes I am not able to reproduce your described freeze scenario on Windows Vista SP2, 4GB RAM, Dual-Core Opteron.
