I also tested this with my ubuntu 9.04 machine and had no problem opening the
doc in OOo 3.1. You said, that it ended in extreme memory consumption - I guess
that your XServer has problems in processing the graphics and thus it suffers
from a memory leak.
BTW: my ubuntu system has all latest updates.
