I followed the suggestions in the forum discussion hennerdrewes posted on his
comment, and the issue was solved.

I went into the Internet Options, placing Outlook Express as my default email
client, than opened Thunderbird, which asked me to set it as the default email
client, and lo! Openoffice could again find its way to send via mail the 
documents.
