I'm sorry but the problem is still there in oo 3.10 (as distributed with Ubuntu
0.04). An animated spash thingie pops up with a progress bar, presumably
indicating progress loading components of OpenOffice.

The documentation of the -p option clearly states "Prints the files {filename1}
{filename2} ... to the default printer and ends. The splash screen does not
appear."

To see the documentation, open any .doc file, then click Help->OpenOffice.org
Help
and search for "command line parameters" and scroll to the -p option.
