re b: Yes, you are only one person affected, but you also appear to be the only
person affected---at least, nobody else appears to have reported this problem
before, in all the years.
Plus, even if we improved things a little here, using symlinks would remain a
brittle thing. For example, while a symlink from oowriter to swriter would
work, a symlink from, say, ooffice to soffice would not. (Even though "symlinks
are every day Unix feature" they are not transparent, and using them does have
implications.) So, I think I just close this issue again.
