Indeed, the slightly misplaced connection points were the original reason that
the self intersecting
polygon existed. So the best solution was to fix it right at the source of the
problem.
SolveCrossovers not finding and removing the resulting self intersections was
the other problem.
(this was the polygon that wasn't split up:
