This behaviour is intended. A table in Writer and the Calc spreadsheet should
behave like an "industry standard" spreadsheet application and start the formula
input when entering the "=" at the beginning of a cell. The same relates the
fact, that the number without equal sign will be right aligned. In Writer, you
can disable this by right-clicking in a table and switching off "Number
recognition".
