Install "Fontin" font (from www.josbuivenga.demon.nl/fontin.html) With "Fontin" bold+italic-text looks as described by sxeraverx. In Thunderbird bold+italic looks fine. (See the Screenshot attached.) With the Standard fonts in contrast true-italic works fine in OOo.
