Well, it does perfectly works fine if you have a "English (Canada)" dictionary
installed. Thus you better install one or change the language of the text to one
with an available dictionary.

To see what languages are currently available for spell checking just open the
Format/Character dialog and look for languages that have a tiny check mark to
the left. If there is none for your preferred language you have to configure
and/or download a respective dictionary extension.

For example get one of these:
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/node/1335
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/en_CA

And you need to restart OOo after installing them (that includes to disable the
quick starter).
