jmol123's checksum for "OOo_3.1.1_Win32Intel_install_wJRE_en-US.exe" is the same
as I found on <http://download.openoffice.org/md5sums/3.1.1_md5sums.txt>, so the
installation file seems to be ok.
I can't see anything unexpected in the way reporter installed.

Does anyone remember the history of the installation option "delete older
versions"? I believe I saw during the default installation for 3.0(?), but then
it moved to the customer installation (with 3.1.1?). So I accidently deleted my
2.4.1.

It seems you still have a working 2.4.1 on your PC? Can you repair it in "System
settings / Software" (I use XP German, so I do not know how it is named
correctly)?
Does that heal you problem so that you can use 2.4.1 without restrictions?
If the file relation OOo - ODF document breaks again when you uninstall 2.4.1
after the test I mentioned before and the relation reappears when you reinstall
2.4.1 again, that would prove that you really have an OOo problem and not a
VISTA problem.
I strongly recommend to discuss this problem in user mailing list and forum,
there you will reach much more VISTA users. May be your discussion there might
generate new knowledge to find out what causes your problem, and that knowledge
might help here.
