With "trying to filter data", I suspect you mean using the "Standard filter"
button in the table data view, or in a form.
I suppose this issue here is a duplicate of issue 103056, which will be fixed in
OOo 3.2. We can confirm or falsify this if you tell us your database system, and
what exactly you're doing when you filter.
