kfitzner->HDU:
With respect, I dissagree with the resolution. In this case, I would suggest
that the "right" thing to do would be to compromise on the standard postscript
35 fonts. In this case, I assert that the greater good would be to prefer Type
1 fonts over TrueType, but only for the Postscript 35 standard fonts.
The reason I suggest this is the greater good can be seen by itemizing what the
effects would be by prefering Type 1 over TrueType for the standard 35:
1) People who have actual Type 1 fonts from among the standard Postscript 35.
By preferring Type 1 over TrueType for the standard 35 fonts, this group would
be able to use them.
2) All people, regardless of whether they have any Type 1 fonts or not. This
group will still be able to use the Microsoft clone fonts (Arial, Times New
Roman, etc) by selecting those explicitely.
3) People who have installed acutual (non-renamed) fonts belonging to the 35
standard postscript fonts - ie: Helvetica.ttf, Times.ttf, etc. These people
will NOT be able to use an actual Helvetica.ttf named TrueType font, but only if
these people ALSO have Type 1 fonts of the exact same group.
I would suggest that the group in case 1 is far far larger than case 3. How
many people will have both type 1 and TrueType fonts installed that are actually
part of the standard 35 Postscript fonts? Anyone in this group is likely to be
hard-core into getting the font they want and can use Adobe Type Manager to turn
off and on the actual Type 1 versions at will.
Therefore, I conclude that making an exception on the TrueType preference for
any font in the standard group of the Postscript 35 is by far the best way to
go.
I would also assert that turning off this preference for TrueType over Type 1
entirely is also in the greater good, in that this preference for TrueType over
Type 1 by and far only ever serves to select Arial over Helvetica, as an
example. There are very few Type 1 fonts that will identify themselves with the
same name as a TrueType font. Because of this, if a person has this Type 1 font
installed, I would suggest that it is the will of the user that this font be
user. This preference for TrueType over Type 1, I assert, violates the concept
that the software should do what the user wants. The user can use ATM to turn
on and off the Type 1 fonts at will. Thus, the user will still be able to use
the TrueType version if the user so wants, but because of this preference in
OpenOffice, a user can never ever use the Type 1 font.
I am taking the liberty of reopening this issue. I apologize if this is beyond
my authority. If the above arguments are rejected, please feel free to reclose
it and I will leave it as such.
