You can actually set the NAMEMAX macro (not .NAMEMAX macro as the man page says) to a very small value and provoke the problem. But besides that if you switch off the .DIRCACHE a file that is longer than NAMEMAX is treated as having timestamp 0 (old) and therefore always build I couldn't produce something that really fails. Can you give an example?
