Since older versions of MS Word only have MathType 3.1 by default (and Word 2007 does no longer use MathType at all), our the support for MathType import/export is limited up to MathType 3.1. Thus either you need to be able to reproduce the same problem with just plain MS Word i.e. MathType 3.1 or this issue will be invalid.
