Arguments against this enhancement.

1) Your "looks very" nice.
The fact you added a smiley at the end tells me you will understand that your
argument is highly subjective and thus not an argument :)
I could say "it's ugly" without further detail: +1 + -1 =0

(BTW: I am native of country where the space - thin or not - IS the norm as
thousand separator. So that one cannot accuse me of being biased when I advocate
against your proposal. ;) )

Now the real argumentation...

2) "separator can lead to confusion when (printed) documents are exchanged
between countries with different usages of commas and periods"

Here and in the rest of your motivation I see an attempt to say "this world with
many different - and sometimes even contradictory - languages, cultures and
usages makes exchanges complicated and might even lead to errors. Let's adopt a
common way of communicating, standardizing...".

<sigh> That's a big question I don't want to discuss here. I consider this also
as not a good argument because I tend to prefer culture heterogeneity to
technical ease of use. In other words, the machine has to adapt to the people,
not the contrary.

But ok, you speak about "optional" use... But there I ask myself: why should we
(software makers) respect locales and standards if we give the user the
possibility to break those standards?

3) Technical argumentation.

a) AFAIK the Unicode U+2009 character is not available in a majority of fonts
thus you would get 1000000 or maybe even 1?000?000 in some cases.

b) The Unicode U+2009 is a breaking space. Thus, you will get in some cases:
1 000<end of line>
000

Especially for the 2 last reasons I'd like to close this issue as WONTFIX.
Though, if you want, I'd like to invite you to discuss this further (and first
of all the motivation of your proposal) on [email protected].
