other than "\n" (line break), the regular expression for paragraph end (^$) can
not be "piled up" in the Find&Replace "Find" field.
This is a duplicate of issue 46165 ("Regular expressions work inconsistently or
not at all when combined.") Marking issue as such.
In order to remove empty paragraphs, you can use the AutoCorrect feature:
(1) Tools - Options - on tab "Options", check the option "Remove blank
paragraphs".
(2) Format - AutoCorrect - Apply
-> Now all empty paragraphs and double line breaks are removed
