Another way is via extension http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/CT2N to 4: Because they are formatted numeric, but the actual content is text. This fact uses fst in his find&replace solution. to 2: 'Why'-questions are difficult to be answered. You are asking about a twenty years old design decision.
