I wanted to mention this in case it helps someone else. I was having trouble
opening files from on a mounted network drive. The networked drive on OS X
Server 10.6 using SMB, accessed by windows XP computer. Some files would not
open, may or may not get a splash screen and open office quits/crashes.

Turns out the offending files were under a folder that contained a space at the
end of the folder name. Once name was changed, the problem is solved. Not so
much a bug in OO, but a quirk with this kind of mixed OS networking.

How to recreate:
-Create a folder with a space at the end of the name on OS X server 10.6 and
share using SMB
-Create OO Doc in this folder
-Try to open OO document on a PC running XP with shared drive mounted.

Expected result: File Opens
Actual Result: Splash screen, then nothing - or nothing at all.
