I think a more fruitful investigation is the fact that there seems to be a new slowdown in OO odt files with graphics (see bug #108255, where I added a comment, and there are at least two other bugs complaining about new slowdown in odt files with graphics as of version OO 3.1). This slowdown was in fact the reason I was trying to use fodt in the first place. If it is going to be fixed (I hope!)
