The problem was due to additional markup added to the original mail (unbeknown
to the sender of the mail) by MS Outlook. Apparently, Outlook creates
"smarttags" around place names. Here are two snippets of source from the
original message as an example.

development of the future ATM system =
in=20
<?xml:namespace prefix =3D st1 ns =3D =
"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"=20
/><st1:place>Europe</st1:place>. Activities are aligned =

which seems to be the place in the message where the "smarttags" were
initialised, then used; and

5 sites (Br=E9tigny,=20
<st1:City><st1:place>Brussels</st1:place></st1:City>,=20
<st1:place><st1:City>Budapest</st1:City>,=20
<st1:country-region>Luxembourg</st1:country-region></st1:place> and=20
<st1:City><st1:place>Prague</st1:place></st1:City>) under one=20
management.

Copying the text into a basic text editor such as gedit removes this markup.
