In this case, the user must tell OOo what the correct file type is. You can do that by selecting the correct file type from the drop down list in the File > Open dialog window. First select the file by name from the files list and then select the correct file type. For example, a file containing a data table encoded as html but named "data.xls" is mismatched: the file name indicates that the file contains a spreadsheet in Excel binary format. So the user must tell OOo what the correct file type is. Selecting "HTML Document (OpenOffice.org Calc)" as the file type will cause the data in the file to be imported into Calc as usual.
