I've got a spreadsheet of 3000 rows, and 10 columns; 3 of which are vlookup()s to other sheets; each of these referenced sheets have between 3000 - 30000 rows. On opening the spreadsheet, while it takes < 10 seconds to open the spreadsheet, the status bar then changes display Adapt row height; and the progress bar takes approx. 10 minutes to complete. This is running XP, 2.0GHz dual core CPU; 2GB RAM.
