------- Additional comments from [email protected] Tue Mar 16 17:51:35 +0000 2010 ------- I fully concur with those who see this problem as a major no-no. But I have also noticed other strange behavior with the keyboard buffer that seems unique to OpenOffice (at least the latest Windows version). And it does not seem to happen with other apps on my desktop. The keyboard buffer should not be flushed during auto-saves. When the auto-save has been completed, the "held-back" characters should appear, meaning that a fast typist will be able to continue his work. I know nothing about the underlying code but I am wondering if the extra GDK abstraction layer in Windows is somehow taking away from OO's ability to react swiftly to keyboard events and the like. It seems sluggish at times. I have noticed that occasionally the first character in a line is not upper case even though I have used the shift key. This may have to do to with marginal timing which I have gotten away with over the years but it does NOT happen with other apps. Unfortunately it is hard to reproduce when you are aware of the problem and your typing adapts accordingly. I have also noticed that OO suddenly starts some background task (probably re-pagination) causing keyboard input to be held back for 5-10 seconds. This seems to get worse with larger documents. Contrast all of this with Google's Chrome browser which runs atop an open-source Windows Template Library and shows much more nimble behavior and good graphics to boot. I'm not trying to be a party pooper here. I support OO and have rolled it out with many business clients but I am concerned at its current sluggish behavior and how this will impact on its wider acceptance. Keyboard entry is fundamental. And there is most definitely a fundamental problem here with OO at least in the Windows version. Perhaps it can be solved by changing the threading model or whatever but it needs to be solved. Business-class word processing is a brutally ruthless activity and it should just work. While this sluggishness may not be bad enough to send a dedicated open-source enthusiast like me back to MS Office, my clients may not be as forgiving. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
