I used outline mode in ms word intensively to write both my graduation and doctoral thesis. It is a valuable tool to jot and organize the ideas that will eventually become sections and paragraphs. The ability to promote and demote text, to collapse sections and to drag whole sections and paragraphs easily all over the document is a very valuable composition feature. I does seem like a mind mapping tool for your document. I switched to OpenOffice and have been using it almost exclusively for the last 8 years and this is a feature I miss every time I have to write a document with more than a couple of sections or paragraphs.
