worksforme, not reproducible on linux with 3.2.0, on an athlon XP2000+ (i.e. no
high-end machine, onboard graphics), be it with embedded or linked images.

Note that generally, OOo has two move modes, one with the preview, and one
where
the object is "sucked into the mouse-cursor", i.e. where the mouse cursor
changes from the move indicator (the two double-arrows in 90° angle) to a
regular pointer cursor with a small rectangle in the lower right.

The "sucked in" mode is used when you don't start dragging immediately, but
instead hold still while pressing the mouse. In this mode, you can use <ctrl>
to
copy the object.

Could of course be that your video driver has a repaint problem - i.e. OOo
creates the preview as you drag around, but the screen is not updated by your
graphics adapter. And when using a distro-version of OOo that might add some
patches that change graphics output and the like - if you see a checkbox in
Tools|Options → OOo → View [x] use hardware acceleration, you can try to
uncheck
it.
