Make sure you use a long document with multiple chapters. The bug occurs because of the little popup window that tells you what chapter you are in. Anyway, I suffer from the same problem as the original poster, also using AwesomeWM. It is extremely annoying to have an application that thinks it is smarter than my window manager: it is not smarter. It is making OOo unusable for me.
