Whoops, sorry, it looks like I was unclear. What I was trying to say was: If I
create a custom macro and assign it to a key combination, that key combination
will not execute my custom macro, independent of whether that key combination
had a pre-assigned macro or not in the default config. For those key
combinations with pre-assigned/default 'macros', (Ctrl-E = Center text, Ctrl-U =
Underline ), that pre-assigned macro is what executes, even if my custom macro
is shown as assigned. I had thought that this issue might depend on whether
the key combination I chose had been used for a pre-assigned macro, but (as I
was trying to say earlier) I found no such dependency. Sorry about the
confusion!

A further complication: Sometimes, I have succeeded in making assignments work
_sometimes_. I'm trying to figure out what combination of factors allows it to
work -- some variables I've been considering:

- pre-assigned vs. non-pre-assigned key combinations
- running the macro before assigning it vs not running it
- certain key combinations (Ctrl-numbers vs Ctrl-letters)
- saving the keyboard layout vs. not

The last one is something I just discovered -- I had assumed that macro
assignments were lost at app shutdown unless they were saved as a keyboard file;
I hadn't realized that there was a persistent default arrangement that included
user-assigned macros. For a few seconds I thought that this was the problem
(saving the keyboard arrangement somehow 'removed' the functionality from the
current session), but it appears not. I will continue testing until I can
disambiguate a repeatable case.
