Here is what causes the paint problems and (sometimes) the crash:

When during a search the view is switched to the slide sorter the search dialog
is hidden (that is because one can not search in the slide sorter).

The search dialog is just hidden and still holds a reference (via an Outliner
object) to the view in which the search was started. This keeps the initial
view alive and after the view switch the two views paint into the same window at
the same time, hence the surplus scroll bars and paint errors.

The initial draw view is not destroyed but, to some degree, disposed. Depending
on many factors subsequent access to it may or may not lead to a crash.

A possible solution fit for the OOo 3.2.1 target is this:
instead of merely hiding the search dialog after switching to the slide sorter
view the dialog is destroyed. This then leads to the destruction of the initial
draw view and leaves only one view to paint into the window.
The search dialog is destroyed by resetting the (search) function of the
DocShell.
