Although this is 1.5 years old, the issue is still present in latest OOo 3.2.0
(Build 9479), at least on MacOSX.

The selected layout in the handout view has no effect on the actual printout.

OOo always prints 6 slides on one pages, either as 2x3 (rows x columns) or 3x2,
depending on the page orientation selected in the format -> page menu (note: I
am guessing the English menu and option titles, as I am using the German
language version).

The OOo handbook (accessible via the help menu) suggests to change the number of
slides in the printer settings dialog. While I can choose between slides,
notes, handouts etc, this dialog has *no* control to enter the number of slides
per handout page. According to the documentation, it should have one.

The documentation at
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOo3_User_Guides/Impress_Guide/Creating_handouts
also shows a control to set the number of slides, which does not exist in OOo
3.2.0 on MacOSX.

As result, on MacOSX, it is impossible to print any other handout layouts except
2x3 or 3x2 slides per page.

There is a related (German) discussion here

solution

If you need further information, or if I should tryout something, let me know.
