Found the fix: Deleted my OpenOffice configuration subdirectory in my home
directory. Rebuilt from scratch a test drawing with a text box defined with
black background color and an axial gradient. Export with PDF shows the text
with a proper gradient resolving from black in the center to transparent at the
edge. So, updating openoffice from the default version shipped with Ubuntu
Hardy which I think was 2.4 to the latest available, which is 3.2.0, can have
problems with the old config directory.
