2005 -------
For the time being I have fixed this as follows:
1. When the selection is empty both the slide number and the design name fields
remain empty.
2. When there is exactly one slide selected then both fields are set as in the
draw view.
3. When there is a multi selection then only the slide number field is set (to
"Slide".)
A more general fix--always show the status bar of the center pane--is to
dangerous at the moment and will have to wait until later.
