This design issue is also present in oOo - dev 3.3 using Windows Vista
configuration. Follow the steps below:

Procedure 1:

1. On a blank slide in impress, create 4 ellipses (size and location of the
ellipses doesn’t matter as long as they are within the slide).
2. Go to Slide Show > Custom Animation to open the Custom Animation task plane.
3. Use the Custom Animation task plane to add an effect/animation to each
ellipse created in step 1 (any effect will do).
4. Right click on one of the effects from the list of effects added in step 3
in the Custom Animation task plane.

By following the above step, a pop-up menu appears listing some options
concerning the effect that was right clicked. One of the options is
labeled, “Timing”, which opens the timing option for the effect that was right
clicked. However, following the steps below does not make the timing option
accessible:

Procedure 2:

1. Select all the effects from the list of effects added in procedure 1 in the
Custom Animation task plane.
2. Right click on the effects selected in step 1 of this procedure.

By following the above steps, a pop-up menu appears listing some options
concerning the effects selected in step 1 of procedure 2. I found that the
option labeled, “Timing”, was not present in the menu and that the timing
option was inaccessible.

I did a follow-up test to see if this design issue is also present in Microsoft
PowerPoint 2002. Below are the steps of my follow-up test:

Procedure 3 (follow-up test):

1. On a blank slide in PowerPoint, create 4 ellipses (size and location of the
ellipses doesn’t matter as long as they are within the slide).
2. Go to Slide Show > Custom Animation to open the Custom Animation task plane.
3. Use the Custom Animation task plane to add an effect/animation to each
ellipse.
4. Select all the effects from the list of effects added in step 3 in the
Custom Animation task plane.
5. Right click on the effects selected in step 4 of this procedure.

By following the above steps, a pop-up menu appears listing some options
concerning the effects selected in step 4 of procedure 3. I found that the
option labeled, “Timing”, was present in the menu and that it was possible to
access the timing option after following steps 4 and 5 in procedure 3 in
PowerPoint. To continue my follow-up test, I followed the following steps to
see if the timing option has the ability to change timing settings of more than
one effect all in one go:

Procedure 4 (follow-up test continued):

1. Select all the effects from the list of effects added in step 3 of procedure
3 in the Custom Animation task plane.
2. Right click on the effects selected in step 1 of this procedure to open up a
pop-up menu.
3. Click on “Timing” in the pop-up menu to open up the timing option.
4. In the timing option, set the delay to 2 seconds and click ok.
5. Go to Slide Show > View Show to start the slide show and run through the
slide show.

Following the step above, I found that each effect does not start until 2
seconds have passed after the click. This is to show that the timing option has
the ability to change timing settings of more than one effect all in one go in
PowerPoint.

Microsoft PowerPoint is a well-respected product and is used by most customers
around the world; it is considered the universal presentation creator by most
customers. Because of this, most customers would expect Impress to have a
similar design to that of PowerPoint. Therefore, PowerPoint makes a good oracle
to compare Impress with. Since this design issue is present in Impress and not
present in PowerPoint, it is an issue worth fixing. If this enhancement is
deferred, it may reduce the quality of Impress relative to PowerPoint and most
customers may choose to continue using PowerPoint instead of switching to
Impress. Impress must, at the very least, be comparable to PowerPoint.

Furthermore, fixing this design issue will make custom animation in Impress
more convenient and efficient. It would be very inconvenient and time-consuming
for users if they had to set the timing of each effect one by one, especially
in time-sensitive projects like business projects or school projects that are
under pressure to meet a specific deadline. It could also lead businesses or
students to miss deadlines because of the time spent to set the timing of each
effect one by one. This issue could make the difference between a bad grade and
a good grade for a student, or loss and revenue for a business. So having this
issue fixed will make custom animation in Impress more convenient and efficient
and will save users a lot of time. Not only will businesses or students be able
to meet deadlines (if this issue was fixed), they will be able to accomplish
more in less time.
