If I remember correctly, when I have investigated the problem on one of our linux systems, the cp command had just the same problems and had also crashed. But I did not investigate it deep, so it could be that the reason for the crash was something different. I will try performance test with the copy/paste solution to see how it looks on our test-platforms.
