No (both the OS and OOo were new installs).

I hadn't, but we have a winner (meaning that suggestion solved
the problem). THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Was there some way I was
supposed to know to do that?
I will mark this as invalid (although it seems there is SOME
kind of bug here). Unfortunately, I just blew away the files
without saving the bad copies, so now I couldn't reproduce it
if I tried.
