Ok, the MWM hints I understand now; this fix was incomplete. I still don't
understand why not setting a MWM hint (or deleting the property before going
fullscreen) should change anything, but at least that does seem to do the trick
for our generic X11 code (which runs also on KDE). reopening this issue for at
least that commit.

Alas that fixes only the generic X case, the gtk case is still broken - not
surprising since dannybaumann says, it's gtk_window_fullscreen itself that is
the culprit. I'll try to find a workaround for that, but I'm not hopeful
