I believe issue 50278 also addresses this problem. The resolution here does not solve the problem, because what is needed is for the footnote reference number (in the footnote area, not the text) to be superscript while the footnote text is normal. I can find no way of changing the character style of the footnote reference number independently of the footnote text.
