I was able to recreate the same problem in the Untitled attachment.
Here the exact steps I took just as I did with the original file:
1. Typed: This .odt file is being saved as .xml
2. Saved the file with file type .xml, closed and reopened it.
3. I copied and pasted a couple of URLs that I cited as sources in the original
file
4. Selected all and changed the font type to Arial/10.
5. Saved and closed the file
When I reopened it only the first letter shows but the word count 41 words/311
characters.
