mla and ja, thank you for responding to this issue.
mla, you did reproduce the behavior when getting err502=sqrt(-1).
ja, using the COMPLEX() function set is what is required in this situation.
err502 in the help file notes this is due to a negative in the square root but
does not provide any further resolution or recommendation.
If one is new or not as familiar with OOo Calc, logically performs sqrt(-1) in
anticipation of getting i, and instead gets err502, this can cause them to be
left in a lurch regarding err502. In contrast, one helpful resolution to this
is if OOo Calc kindly asks, "Did you mean IMSQRT(-1)?". Another, much less
likely resolution due to the already existing COMPLEX() function set, is allow
i=sqrt(-1). A third resolution is when one right clicks err502 it gives a
description of likely helpful resolutions. Yes, one could respond to this
"Google it", RTM, post your question on the forum, ask in IRC, or any of the
other duly noted responses. Implementing a solution such as that recommended in
this issue makes it an easier transition for the OOo newcomer from a competing
platform, further minimizing time spent looking for solutions to problems of
problems.
