First remark: This seems to be a "bug with tradition", possibly going back to
OOo 1.0.1 (bug 9858), probably also described in bug 64669.
I first noticed the bug when inserting a "right arrow" from the symbol font
caused an extra blank line to appear. Investigating further (first I had
suspected a bad font), I found that other changes in a line (like adding a
formula object) also causes an extra line to appear.
At some moment I realized that "regiter-true" (German: Registerhaltigkeit)
causes this effect. I think the algorithm is very bad:
The idea is to make lines on opposite pages appear side-by-side in a maximum
number of cases. This could be done by adjusting inter-paragraph vertical
spacing, inter-line spacing, etc.
OOo still seems to prefer adding one empty line in the middle of a paragraph
over making a small adjustment that reduces the inter-line spacing.
An annotated screen shot will make things more obvious (I added red corrections
where empty lines should go away, and I added green alignment marks where I
guessed OOo will force the alignment. I used GIMP to move lines to positions
that I'd prefer for another "screen shot". I'll provide two sample documents,
one using formulas, the other a "right arrow" from the Open Symbol font (should
work with similar symbol fonts as well).
Summary: very bad formatting choice, can't understand why this bug existed for
so long.
