gbuild will fall back on POSIX (IEEE Std 1003.1-2008) cp and touch when $GNUCOPY
is unset. I dont know how well the old build system handles that.
@pjanik: Could you give that a try?
If that works, configure should check for a GNU cp from at least fileutils 4.1.1
as per:

That seems to be the first version with --preserve=...
BTW, Murphy strikes again: one version below the first to support it ...
