A complete uninstall and a new install from a fresh download have given me a
copy of OOo 3.3 that works.
Note this was different from the reinstall reported earlier. In that case I had
chosen repair, which it didn't
This installation had no problems and no error messages.
It doesn't tell us what happened but at least it's a solution.
