I used the same procedures as before and it appears to be working now. When I restarted OOo after killing it, I was presented with a recovery dialog that allowed me to recover the document I was working with from the backup structure that was created. After the recovery was complete, I exited OOo properly and the backup structure was deleted. So I would suggest that this issue be closed. Unless of course you feel some other dependency is an issue that may make it work or fail depending on different systems.
