thanks for using and supporting OpenOffice.org...
In OOo1.9mxxx (the coming OOo2.0) there's a tool "Word Count " in Tools -> Word
Count which contains
- word count
- character count
for
- current selection
- whole document
I think this is the tool you are searching for...
BTW: Are you really using OOo1.0.3??
