Hi ahlanderj,
I followed your steps (on Solaris since I don't have Windows...) ...
1. Open a read-only document.
==> works for me...
2. Save As... [some other name]
==> works for me...
3. Edit the document (notice you can edit fine)
==> works for me...
4. Look at File Menu (notice save option is greyed out)
==> works for me... save option is not greyed out...
5. Close document (notice it doesn't prompt to save changes)
==> works for me...
